Annual Review of Johnson IP in 2020
The past 2020 was a tough year for the whole world. Under the influence of the Covid-19, the health and safety of people around the world are facing a major crisis, and the development of enterprises is also facing severe tests. In such an environment, the staffs of Johnson Intellectual Property Agency still stick to their posts and use their hard work to hand in a satisfactory answer for themselves and the team.
In spite of the severe test of the epidemic this year and the fierce competition in Guangdong, Johnson IP maintained a steady increase in the number of cases handled. The number of cases handled has reached 6,877, with 15.2% increase over last year. The substantial increase in the number of cases greatly encouraged the team, and at the same time strengthened the pressure of drafting. With the growth of the business, Johnson IP recruited more patent attorneys to join in. 16 new patent attorneys were enrolled in our firm this year to ensure the efficiency of drafting.
In 2020, Johnson IP ranks fourth among patent agencies in Shenzhen. This ranking data comes from the PatSnap database. The agency’s own situation (age, number of patent attorneys, number of branches), customer situation (customer type, situation of high-quality customers), and writing quality (the overall application volume, application volume of invention, authorization rate of invention, average annual withdrawal volume, number of claims) are evaluated in this ranking. Our founding partner, Mr. Wang Yongwen, was invited as an expert in the inspection and identification of intellectual property infringement disputes in Foshan. This also reflects the government’s recognition of Johnson IP in handling intellectual property disputes and litigation.
Even if face-to-face training is hindered, Johnson IP continues to conduct external training courses and various activities online. We held the first foreign-related online IP seminar with Winter Brandl et. al. Since then, dozens of online training seminars on intellectual property have been held successfully, in which we connected with IP lawyers in Southeast Asia, the Philippines, Canada, Japan, the United States, and Macau.
As the Principle Member of TIIPA (Alliance of Technology Innovation and IP Protection), Johnson IP successfully held the Third TIIP International Forum in November 2020. Hundreds of well-known enterprises, tens of organizational units together with intellectual property agencies from over 20 countries and technological experts attended to discuss how to promote international communication and cooperation on technology innovation and IP protection. Thousands of people registered and hundreds of people attended our online conference.

As the organization unit of the TIIPA Alliance, Shenzhen Enterprise Science and Technology Innovation Association (SZESTIA) has also held a variety of intellectual property activities in the past 2020, with outstanding results.
One of their brand activity “Meet on Wednesday” Salon held six sessions last year, focusing on different topics such as employee competition restriction management, national high-tech enterprise recognition and government project funding policies, intellectual property protection in the field of biopharmaceuticals, Original design and IPR protection, and corporate science and technology policy sharing, brought rich and diverse IP experience to Shenzhen entrepreneurs.
Hosted by SZESTIA, the “Entrepreneurship in Shenzhen Bay” is also very commendable. On 29 May 2020, the first roadshow of the “Entrepreneurship in Shenzhen Bay” angel round investment and financing project attracted a group of angel investment funds of more than 5 billion yuan, and even the consulate of the South Korean consulate in Guangzhou attended. The entrepreneurial field involves technologies such as micro-LED display control, microfluidic real-time inspection equipment, and semiconductor silicon carbide carrier disks. All belongings to the 5G new infrastructure, health, and semiconductor chip industries have attracted much attention during the Two Sessions.
In the new year, Johnson IP will bring more exciting activities to strengthen the contact with our clients and foreign cooperatives. “Although hills ’n rills set us apart, the moon and wind share our kind heart.” We believe that in the new year, our friends will be more rewarding.
